Celebrate With Me

| 16 August, 2014 13:38

Its August and the summer is drawing to a close. As usual I continue to search for a painterly language for the inner world of feelings and the non literal world which interests me so intensly

Preparations for upcoming exhibitions have been making this a very special and busy summer. The moderate weather has inspired me to paint outdoors..large canvases out in the summer sun, canvases lying on the ground, me and buckets of water, jars of paint, towells, string...Just experiencing summer days this way has given me new direction and energy..I think the work is doing the same.

Now to invite you to see some of this new work..and there are multiple opportunities to do so..

The America Exhibit in November

| 07 June, 2014 16:07

I was thinking about what inspired me about the concept of America , the theme of an upcoming juried invitational exhibition to be held at the State Museum in Trenton. Since the theme conjures up visual images of vast spaces, diversity, urban concepts, my challenge as an abstract artist was to address this theme as I felt it personally and of all the thousands of ways to see it, I could only see one thing so I began to explore the possible ways of speaking to the issue of being an immigrant..to leaving the known , the loved, the language, the people of ones life for some unknown dream, some imagined state of betterment. What risks are taken, over land, over seas..and always in the background the unknown.

I have two paintings now, one very dark and one filled with light.. I talk with other artists invited to submit work and we each struggle with the similiar issues...does this work speak to what it is I am trying to say. Each painting, sculpture, done for this event will reflect its creator in concepts and media. I am comfortable with both works and even if neither is accepted , I will be pleased to have addressed this theme as a challenge and for the opportunity to be considered for the November exhibition..

Unprimed Canvas

| 11 November, 2013 12:22

It was a morning of recollection as I revisited my daughter Rebecca, who tragically passed away this year in February . Again my sketchbook was my companion at breakfast. Along with the sketches, poems filled the pages, poems of remembrance, and grief. It dawned on  me that after 30 years of teaching in an Art Therapy classroom , I was finally designing my own passage into grief recovery and now that the poetry had been written, the sketches, recorded.. my muse pointed me straight to the studio. The unprimed canvas drapped over the stretchers, waiting to be attached and readied for new work, beckoned to be used in its natural state so I resisted my usual urge to apply gesso, and began to print on the dampened raw canvas. The print then evolved into an abstract meditation of my daughters presence in my life and I began a letter written in graphite all around the edges, words piled over each other, creating their own distinctive patterns and forms. I will stretch this exciting adventure into the healing qualities of art this morning, its quiet elegance a reminder of a precious loved one who will always be here with me. This is the first of a new series which explore "presence" and its power even when the physicallity of that presence is gone.

Morning with Tea

| 01 December, 2011 11:43

The immediacy of sketching is such a relief especially for a painter whose work evolves through a process of addition and elimination. Exploration and discovery do not alway extend to the artist the same  immediate gratification of the sketch.

Lately I have been poking about in sketchbooks, and finding exciting entries..many of them discovered long after the date of execution To my surprise,..inspiration is everywhere. So this morning I was inspired to take out my sketchbook, grab a marker and try to capture the light as it passed over the kitchen window sill. I dont have any idea if that image will  sleep like so many others on the shelf but it was envigorating just to do it..to record that moment , the reality of a morning with a cup of tea before the day goes where it will.
